News!!!

We quote from the Rolling Analysis tutorial:

"News over-rides everything else, fundamental, technical, or any other analysis. A news item can cause a stock to go either up or down with no apparent logic."

A brief news item reporting the quarterly performance of a stock can cause the price to drop sharply, or rise sharply. We saw such an example recently on the company Safety-Kleen (SK). Nothing about the company changed with the news announcement, its inherent value remained intact, there were no changes in management, strategy, or resources. Yet its price dropped 25% on a report of increased earnings! Why? It missed estimates by 2-cents! That, good friends, is the irrationality of the market. This reaction is based more on emotion than logic.

For us to be in tune with market-emotion, our number one lesson is to pay attention to the news as we trade our way to higher returns. It is simply in our best interest to learn all we can about companies with which we trade. We can learn when quarterly reports are to be issued which may have helped with a purchase of SK. However, this cuts both ways where 2-cent earnings over the analysts estimates could have kicked the price up. We just need to understand the rules of this game. We will continue to learn by engaging in the process. Paper trades can provide this experience with very low cost (no cost, save the time invested).

Investorama, Free Charting Service

Investment success in any arena of the market is always fraught with risk. Our goal at Pro-fundity is to provide educational services to help reduce that risk. That does not mean making your decisions for you, telling you when and where to buy and sell. You can pay for that kind of service with BIG bucks.

Rather, we want you to have the right tools to make more good choices than bad. This feature will help you check the news on a particular stock.

Here's a treat, spelled - "FREE!" Let's go to a good net resource for financial information and take advantage of news features there for our taking. Go to the web URL www.investorama.com and follow these steps:

  1. At the Main page: Enter a stock ticker under Research a Stock; for this example use the ticker RMII (Rocky Mountain Internet) - GO!
  2. That brings us to a page with a host of categories:
  3. *  Featured Research		*  Company Background
    * Fundamental Data * Earnings Estimates
    *  Advice & Analysis            *  Message Boards
    * Stock Quotes * Stock Charts
    * Company News * Corporate SEC Filings
    *  Industry Reports/Competitors *  Insider Trades
    *  Other Web Links

  4. We'll take a look at two options on this page; First, under Fundamental Data, click on Hoover's Capsule.
  5. Again there are a bunch of options. Click on the "News" tab (middle of the page), just under Search Results.
  6. This will take you to a list of Rocky Mountain Internet company news items and company press releases.
  7. The press picks up on these company releases and distributes this news through their various channels, to both public and subscriber clients.
  8. You can scan down recent news stories to determine if there has been Good or Bad news in the recent past. The import of news has a very short shelf life, so news that happened a month ago is sterile.
  9. Now back out to the "Stock Power Search" on Investorama to try the second option.
  10. Scroll down to the Company Background group and click on "Yahoo! Company Profile."
  11. You will be brought to a page on a company profile for RMII. Click on News to the right of "More Info:" This lists a long string of RMII news from the most recent to the oldest. This is our choice for the news because of the format, but you can find one you like.
  12. You can spend a lot of your web time in these areas to help you with "provident" investment decisions. It is quick and low cost. You can have a lot of fun looking at all the possibilities with this service.
