Greetings, fellow Pro-fundity team members - 02-18-05.

“SELL POINT 2”
See Advanced Tools (Be sure you are using revision 2.5!)

  1. Let's pick up on our last guidepost to punch up the power and ease of using Sell Point, our new trading program you'll find no-where else but on Pro-fundity.

Let me begin with this weeks Pick Performance:

Fig. 1. Pick Performance for 2/18/05.

  2. We've highlighted the three categories selected on 1/7/05. These were generally good choices, with positive returns in the 42 days. Remember, these returns are with no action on our part. But how would we do in the heat of the battle, having to make exit decisions once the picks have been made? Enter "Sell Point!"

  3. Follow this data trail to find that answer. First, here is what the Watchlist looks like on TCNet for the first category, where all of our picks originate.

Fig. 2. Watchlist for Main Picks selected 1/7/05.

  4. we've chosen one of the ten Main Picks, TOA, to follow the trail. This watch list was created on Friday 1/7/05, when the picks were made. The marker on the chart shows that date. Next, move ahead 42 calendar days to see how these picks fared by Friday last (2/18/05).

    Fig. 3. Watchlist tracking

  5. TOA has increased from $23.55 to $28.48 in that time. But what about the pull-back in February? We need to go to Sell-Point to answer that. First, we gather data to entet into SP. On the same TCNet screen, we click on Data Bank, Export to Text...

Fig. 4. First TCNet screen for exporting data to text

  6. Choosing the number of days, the name of the file, and the location...

Fig. 5. Second TCNet screen for data export

  7. The data is moved to an Excel spreadsheet we can then copy and paste into Sell-Point!

Fig. 6. Excel data, ready for Copy & Paste

  8. What's the result? The next three slides shows the Sell-Point performance for each category.

  9. Study these three summary sheets carefully. Our question about TOA's pull-back in February, TOA sold on 2/11/05 at $27.22 (a 14% gain after 35 days). The rich value of Sell-Point lies in our ability to track live trades daily and to back-test groups of stocks over different time segments. This guidepost outlines how you can do both.

  10. Using the 11 separate tabs (sheets) on the Sell-Point spreadsheet allows you to track up to 10 tickers at a time, or just one, as you choose. Notice, the initial stop in each case was used as 8%. This is an arbitraty choice. You can select any stop you choose. Review the steps we must exercise to make Sell-Point work:

    • Pick a stock and a buy-date.
    • Enter the first days data, with the closing price as your buy point. This may be the closing price or not. Whatever you place in this cell measures progress going forward. Notice, the green cells are for your inputs.
    • Enter the amount of your investment, commission cost, target price and initial stop. This is important, forcing us to look at the Reward/Risk ratio prior to the trade.
    • There is a green cell on sheet 11 (Portfolio Summary Sheet), where you can enter a percentage number as the initial stop. This will automatically enter the initial stop as that percentage of your buy price on all trade sheets. You can override this by typing a stop value into the green cell on trade sheets (1 through 10).
    • After about a 5% price gain, the Sell-Point stop mechanism takes over and protects your gains as prices rise, while allowing no limit on the up-side. This is a best-example of cutting losses short and letting profits run. See how this takes place on the three summary sheets shown above.

  11. So, in under 30 minutes I've analyzed 30 stock picks against the Sell-Point technique. This is a formidable combination, the power of TCNet and Pro-fundity Sell-Point, to test strategies and trading techniques in a rapid and credible manner. The performance of tickers in this guidepost show the result by investing in the whole group. That is not the best approach. In future GP's we will consider how to select from the list those more likely to go up.
